What are assumptions and why are they important?

Answer

Assumptions are characteristics of the data that you verify are true before performing statistical analysis. They are also sometimes referred to as diagnostics. Assumptions are important because if the requirements for an analysis are not met, the results of that analysis may be misleading or incorrect. For this reason, assumptions should always be checked prior to performing statistical inference.
